Whistleblowers and their attorneys<\/a> filing suit under the False Claims Act <\/a>helped federal authorities recover $2.2 billion in Medicare and Medicaid fraud <\/a>cases in fiscal year 2006, according to a government report just released. The whistleblowers or “relators” received $140 million of the proceeds for their efforts, under the qui tam provisions of the False Claims Act.<\/p>\n

As this whistleblower lawyer blog has written about extensively<\/a>, the federal False Claims Act is the government’s “primary” weapon for combating fraud. As health care expenditures have grown as a share of the federal budget, health care fraud now accounts for more than 70% of the government’s annual fraud recoveries.<\/p>\n

It was encouraging to see the new “Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control Program Annual Report For FY 2006.” This report by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Department of Justice, summarizes both organization’s FY 2006 results in battling Medicare and Medicaid fraud and recovering money improperly obtained from these programs.<\/p>\n
